Being Authentic

What is means to be authentic.

I want you to read the following articles and listen to the radio podcast. I would listen to the podcast first to get more in the mood of the articles. If you don't like hip-hop genre, it does not matter, what you are looking for are the arguments about authenticity.

  • Where and when does something authentic show up?
  • What makes something more real than something else?
  • Who gets to decide?
  • Does it ever get to change? If is changes does it still retain it's original authenticity?
You are here to examine the WHY.
  • Knowing the issues
  • Knowing the audience
  • Understanding the many sides of the issues (there are many more than two sides to any argument)
  • Being able to understand the issues in a multitude of ways

Even if you don't like hip the argument about what is authentic happens all of the time in all other genres of music country music, reggae, metal, jazz - just choose one.

Once you have thought about what it means to be authentic, and you have read the articles and listened to the podcast, I want you to draft a first stab at persuading an audience who is more authentic and why - Peter? Nikki? Iggy?

Just get some ideas down - don't try to "write a speech" but do dig deep about what you think about this issue.

I would like you to put your notes in your Google Drive folder. Be prepared to discuss your notes. Notes mean that you are talking to yourself about the ideas that I mentioned above:

  • Where and when does something authentic show up?
  • What makes something more real than something else?
  • Who gets to decide?
  • Does it ever get to change? If is changes does it still retain it's original authenticity?
